I got a 2month old longhorn heifer we want to tame and train to lead and things. I have never ever done this before. We were gonna start last month but a horse got hurt pretty bad and she kinda got pushed to the side. We got her haltered last night but not after she tryed to jump up the barn walls a few times and through the fence. the hardest thing is her mom is not the friendliest cow. Anyways any tips or tricks? thank you =)

here a pic of her

Just stay calm and patient with her, and she should come around in time. Staying calm is one of the most important things to remember when you work with young cattle. They spook easily, and will respond to gentleness much better and faster than brute force.

Cute Pair!

What I have noticed is that if you rub them down while they are nursing it goes smoother. However, you said mom isn't tame so that could be a problem.

This has also worked for me. Put the cow/calf in a relatively small pen. Let the calf drag the halter for 5-7 days. Then tie her up ALL DAY (with enough room to lay down). Lead her to mom in the morning for a snack, at noon, and in the evening. This really calms them down. Spend time with her, even if your a mile away from her, just let her get used to you. Rub her all over and try to find her "spot" where she likes to be rub and really calms her down. Oh yeah, and also HAVE FUN! Good Luck.

thanks all =) I been sitting next to them on the fence line talking to her while feeding momma treats. I was wondering is there any treats for a young calf? like molasses or something? once she got use to me that i could give her to let her know we aint big old monster that are gonna hurt her

TagandKiss, what part of wa are you from?

Tri-Cities :D not far from you.

bleh ok halter didnt work she got the nose part off its way to big for her. so guess halter will have to wait a month lol. Will just have to take it slow and go talk to her and hope she will come up to me when her mom does for grain and treats :D

Get her in a pen that's no bigger than 12X12. You stand in the center with a broom. Keep brushing her with the broom. Don't let her get away from the broom. Try to keep it touching her at all times. She'll circle and circle until she figures out she isn't going to get away, then keep petting her with the broom. After she calms some, shorten your hold on the broom until you can touch her with your hands.

One session may be enough, or it may take more.

thanks all. I will try. the barn is 12x24 thats where we put her to get the halter on and off she trys to climb the walls. she tryed to jump over the doors too silly cow. I am just thankful she didnt get hurt. my sis n law was holding the lead while i tryed to get the halter off and she got kicked in the leg  she does like grain i seen her eat her moms. so i will try that too. =)

aww shes a cutie, I espically like the second pic. She looks as thought she is leading a parade. :)

lol or throwing a fit trying to get her mom to get out of the corral. She is funny she wants to be in the pasture but mom comes in the corral for grain and water and she will stand in front were the gate is, like in the photo until mom comes then she takes off running. its cute. =) love babys.

Get a rope halter -- they're practically adjustable to any size calf. We have used a lamb halter on small calves, but once the calf is a month old it's up to the calf size. The lamb halters are not the durable anyway. Also, you can make a halter with a few rings, a short chain, nylon strapping and a few rivets. Takes a little time, but works well. Don't panic, she'll come around in time!!

Rope Halter = $4

Totally Adjustable. At the moment I am using the same type halter on a 3 wk old calf amd a 1100 pound heifer (and everything in between)
