My son has two steers that he's getting ready for show. I don't think either will be ready for the 1st show, which in in Oct. He's had them about 2mths and they weigh around 540lbs. We are here in S/SE Texas and it is very hot. We have fans, etc. As soon as I can, I will post pics of them so that input can be given. I just found out that we have possibly been feeding the wrong feed (finisher suggested by the Ag teacher). We should be feeding grower.

We are very new and don't have too much of a clue. Other than thing like this message board. We are city slicker. LOL

There are different methods of feeding. Stick with what the teacher suggests. A few teachers I know of are actually trying out feeding finisher first, as well. Just cause you see it here doesn't always mean it's the best thing to do for your calf. ;)

How old are your calves? What breed? I look forward to the pictures. :)

They are: red/white shorthorn and a black amer. angus. I'm not really sure of the age, but they are not a year yet. The angus is friendly and not as skiddish as the red/white. They are due to be de-wormed, de-horned and their hooves done this week. I hope they will maintain their feeding habits.

You live in south Texas, get those freakin' calves of of the finisher. People don't understand that corn that is being broke down in their rumen, is very, very hot. This will cause them to have the runs, be uncomfortable, go off feed and not grow. Switch to a good grower and just feed them that til it cools off. When it gets cooler, you can start adding barley to the grower to put cover on them. What show are you going to?

We have a county show coming up in Oct and the major show in Feb07.

Fort Worth is in Jan., San Antonio is in Feb, and Houston is in Mar.

My son went to San Antonio his first year in the FFA, 2 yrs ago. It was a good experience for a first-timer.

One of the young ladies in FFA w/ my son won at San Antonio last year. Her steer didn't place, but she won in the calf scramble. Both there and Houston. She's good.

They both are going to Houston this year again.

I wouldn't mind going to the one in Ft. Worth. I heard thats a nice one.
