Summer is coming

Last week we got into the 90s and it was unbearable. This week 20s and 30s at night with 50s during the day and it's perfect. Can work outside all day with a flannel and never get uncomfortable. Could stay like this until July for hay making then get back to this after hay is done until November.

Here in Appalachian KY we have what some people call little winters throughout the spring. Cold snaps that become associated with certain trees and plants blooming or events. The names vary from region to region. Here it's typically redbud winter, dogwood winter, blackberry winter, locust winter. Now we are having Linsey Woolsey winter or linen britches winter. The saying is that after linen britches winter you can put away your long johns for the season. Wasn't quite long johns cold yesterday, but I did turn the heat on for a little while this morning. Other variations have a snowball winter ( snowball bush blooming) and whippoorwill winter.
Yesterday was a high of just above 60 with a cold wind. This morning it was 42 and supposed to get to 67. It's sunny and no wind so it's not bad today as it's already 56.
Rest of the week is going to be upper 60's- 70's, so it should be improving.

That's sounds like Sand Mtn Ky Hills . Had a lady that was our elementary janitor. She would come in every cold morning in the spring and announce which "winter" we were having and correct us if we called it the wrong one . Miss Mattie Grace Young was her name . She might have been the worse janitor our school ever had but she could keep you up on the weather. 😁

It's currently 94°F here, I'm smoking some ribs but I'm fixing run to the autoparts store to get a windshield washer pump. Supposed to get up to 96 tomorrow and Sunday, then cool back down into the mid 80s next week. T-storm came thru just after midnight last night but very little rain but I hear Austin got some big hail yesterday.

I just googled it, Sand Mountain, Alabama is considered part of the Appalachian mountains.

Other than making hay I could do 50s all spring/summer/fall. I've tried it 100 times but getting hay to dry at 50 degrees is a challenge. Ha

I'd rather work outside at -20 all day than at 80.

Just looked at the 10 day forecast. It has several days well into the 80's. Ugh!!! Summer the most dreaded time of the year. Below zero in January is preferable to over 100 in July. Today is 40 in the morning and going up to 60 during the day. Why can't it just stay like this until November?
Summer is the best, no coats, no gloves, equipment starts, everything is green, no frozen pipes, no putting out hay, sitting under a tree and having a cold beer in the shade with my wife, taking the kids swimming, going fishing and enjoying the shade and breeze at the bank, going on a stay over at the river and spending the day floating around and enjoying the family, barbecuing outside, watching my kids at the horse show, sitting on the porch watching them crank the handle of the ice cream machine, feeling the warm sun on your back as you put up hay, going into the garden and picking tomatoes and corn, or looking outside and saying it's too cold, let me get the cattle fed and hurry back.

There is nothing about my Scandinavian ancestry or being raised on the north Washington coast that prepares me for hot weather. Putting on a coat, gloves, and a hat before I walk out the door is easy. Feeding 60 cows takes less 45 minutes while sitting in the cab of the feed truck with the heater running. Irrigation in the summer takes an hour and half. And everyone starts at the very crack of dawn to avoid the heat. Feeling the sun cook me while putting hay in the stack ain't fun. Getting things done before 10 so I can get back inside to sit in front of the AC the rest of the day. There are no rattle snakes or mosquitoes in the winter. No frozen pipes because they are all buried deep enough to avoid that. Fall and spring are the best. Winter doesn't bother me at all. I hate summer. My least favorite time of the year.

My Finlander children melt in the summer. They never say it's "too cold" to play outside until it's -15 or -20 and even then if the suns shining they will stay outside for hours all winter long. They would rather shovel snow than anything else. My oldest boy asks when it's going to snow again starting about June 1st. Ha

Frozen pipes aren't a thing here because everything is designed for cold.

I read your comments and my reply to my wife. She laughed and said people are different. A lot of that has to do with where you are raised and are use to.
