Do you have any experience feeding sugar beet shreds, or other beet by products?

Yes. We fed beet pulp for a number of years, and had very good results with it. The beet pulp is sweet, and the cattle liked it. I also did a search for feeding beet pulp, and found that studies indicate that it helps encourage them to eat, it helps them utilize poor roughage better, helps with the conversion of feed to pounds, and is - overall - very beneficial as a feed supplement. You might want to do your own search and read the reports.

It's palatable, and keeps a show animal filled out while keeping their manure more consistant. It also seems to give a slick, shiney appearance faster than any other feed additive, for us.
If we lived closer to beet raising country I'd be looking hard at using beet shreds to stretch hay useage for our whole herd.

Beet pulp is an excellent ingredient. Has been in short supply and pretty darn high this year but as Chris said most show calf raisers can tell you about it. Also great to feed to horses. Many of your seniorhorse feeds are now beet pulp based. Last time I priced a bag of it I think it was about $12 for 40 lb. bag.
