Stuck in 4wd

Not my truck, but my fathers. Half ton Chevrolet. Round switch on dash is how you change it. It's stuck in 4wd, low low lock as a matter of fact. No matter how you turn the thing, it want change. Where do I even start trouble shootin that? My trucks have all been sticks.

Seen this happen before just can't remember what we done to get it out of low lock. Try putting the tranny in netural and let it sit a minute.

The switch controls a vacuum that engages it. Look for a broken vac line probably next to exhaust

Yes, rbb is right. Put it in the 2wd position and let it sit and idle with the transmission in neutral.

May be I should ask what year , it could be all electronic.

I am not a mechanic and for sure don't claim to be. But, during this very cold weather could it be that moisture has frozen the activator on the front axle? Do you have a shop where you can pull it in and put a space heater or something like that under there. Might be a waste of fuel for the heater but it might work.

Looks like it could be electrical 4wd encoder motor. It's a common problem with chevys. From what I looked up.

Dang, I believe that fixed it. One more dumb question. Driving down the road do I want. Auto, or 2H?

2h, all the time unless you need 4wd specifically

If you might unexpectedly hit slick stuff, 4 Auto, otherwise 2H

Normal driving 2h, if it's slick but your getting around ok in 2h, go ahead and put it in 4auto.

It will likely only hang up in low lock Bigfoot. Should shift from two wheel to 4h and back just fine.
