Storm damage

Wind took one port-a-hut and dropped it 200 foot away, in neighbors field. No damage, but we'll have to wait for it to dry up to retrieve it. One, 5 foot away from the other, is still where we put it.

Lightning strike got two of the better cows. We had just weaned a bull calf from the one in order to get it ready to show; she was rebred to the same sire, one we just sold due to age. The other has a 3 month old heifer calf, I hate weaning that age, but she was also show potential so I might mix some milk replacer in her grain.

Why can't lightning hit the cows you planned on culling? :(

Chris...sure hate to hear that. Sounds like you folks had some really bad weather....and you're right. Nothing ever happens to the old slugs.

man you did have a bad storm.an the wind had tobe high to move your porta hut.its always some of your best cows that get killed by lighening.

Many years ago my uncle lost 16 head to lightning. About a third of his herd. Insurance paid for some of it but they stll took a pretty big hit.

Sorry about your troubles, Chris. We had some pretty big storms here last night, too. Hail, high winds, lots of lightning, about 5 inches of rain, and multiple tornado warnings in the area. Fortunately no damage at my place, just a mess to clean up.

Well, insurance will pay, so that's some consolation. Getting those cows out of the pasture is going to be difficult. It's amazing how swollen they were from the lightning, and now it's supposed to get in the 90's today. It didn't stop raining until last night. Since Monday, we've had in excess of 6 inches of rain. The closest gate to the road is also within 500 feet of 3 neighboring houses. While waiting for the dead wagon, we really hate to leave 2 large, extremely bloated carcasses in sight of anyone, and especially not that close to neighbors.

We couldn't catch the calf of the one cow, we'll try again today. Unfortunately I was wrong about the age of the calf that was still on the cow, she's only 6 weeks old.
