Believe it or not, that becomes even sketchier than this set up. The pentle hitch bolted to the bucket, would eliminate most of that though.

try lowering the front end of the top link already, that'll help
 
You could weld some flat stock on the sides, but heck, that is a long piece.....I thought it was going to be 12 inches long...lol

You could make a rib that goes along the top and weld supports in at every 12 inch or so to strengthen the whole thing, or, chain will work too if the middle does not decide to buckle when it is overloaded one day. Look at how they did some of the old jibs, in fact, why not get one, you can get them real cheap here, and mod that instead.

Yeah, after looking at that second picture, this puts a lot of pressure onto the tube if it gets a heavy ball load, and it will seem fine till it gets that bit extra force at some point.
