I've seen 5 year old with 5 ft sticks and just bout everything else. SO, how long do you think your show stick should be compared to your height. I just like to be able to reach the calf's back foot w/o causing a fuss.
 
I was once told that when you stand it up next to you, the top should reach your armpit. For me (cos I'm so short!) this means a shorter cane than most people, so I cut the end off the ones I buy. I work with most of my animals so they set up the back feet by using the halter, and I use the cane or my feet for the front feet. Cane is basically for scratching. Anyway thats just how I do things. I know a lot of people like to have a longer cane when they're showing senior bulls, and a shorter one for younger animals.
 
I like using the 5ft sticks for bigger steers and heifers and smaller ones when I show calves. If I didn't have a 5ft stick for my steers I wouldn't be able to reach his back feet if I needed too and I'm assuming that's why the 5 yr old had a longer stick.

I Like to be able to reach the tail in case I need to pull it down.Also it depends what cow u r using it on. like for a long bodied cow i say long stick and for a short bodied cow short stick. did say that right?

I'm 5'10'' or 6' and I use a short stick, Iam able to reach the back legs, it is a bit harder than with a longer stick but then when I adjust the front feet I don't have to choke up and I can hold the handle to scratch the belly, with a longer stck I have to choke up to do that and then I've got that extra peice weighing me down.
 
I use a 5ft stick, but thats what I've been using forever. I feel out of place with a shorter stick.
 
depends on the animal. I 'prefer' mine to come up to my chin when it is on the ground. I use a short one on calves (in a cow/calf project) and a longer one on cows. For little kids I use the chin rule because they really dont know how to set up the animal correctly without me there tellin them. And I am more concerned with their safety than if the animal looks perfect.
