Steer trying to kill calves? UPDATE

I have some heifers with a couple of steers because of the mud. Anyway I found a calf out side the fence and I put him back in. Went and done some more chores and came back and seen the steer trying to pound the calf into the ground. I seperated them tonight and he is with some smaller ones and he is trying to kill them to.So I seperated HIM and he is by himself. I would get rid of him but he is my daughters 4-H steer.

Anyone have this happen before? He has been with the smaller ones for 3 weeks now and now is just trying to kill them.I know this sounds stupid but I seen it.

Now I've not seen a steer do it, but I have seen a cow try and kills it's calf.

Just keep him seperate like you did JHH. Do not trust him around any calves.

Had a steer once that would push calves around but never keep up the attack. I put him in with the real big boys in the production pen to teach him a lesson, after a week of being on the bottom of the pecking order his attitude mellowed a bit. DMc

I've seen yearling steers and heifers attack calves and nearly kill them. Get him out of there.

Keep a close eye on your daughter when she is with him. I would be tempted to send him on his way, just in case he decides to take her on at some point. Better safe than sorry. :cowboy:

Yep i had a couple mature steers that would do that if the calves got in their way , usually in a pen or corner where the calf could not get a way , had to move the calves or send the steer to Happyland.
