Frost Bite Falls, Minnesota
Minnesota legislature is preparing to name the Labrador Retriever our State Dog.
I didn't know one was needed or how we've survived 160 years without one.
I'm sure it's a popular choice as we have a ton of Black Labs and fitting, as it's a hunting dog.

Does your State have a State dog?
If so which breed?
If not, which breed would you nominate?
I imagine Rhode Island's State Dog would be the Yorkie and New York City's should be a Rat Terrier. :)
 
Great post Butch... I've never thought of this before I read your post and had to look it up. I've lived in TX my whole life and never k ew we had a state dog. And to top it off I've never heard of the breed. Texas State dog is the Blue Lacy. I would have guessed and Aussie or heeler, or even a LGD but nope. It's the Blue Lacy.

While in Kansas as early as 2006, residents have suggested the Cairn Terrier as the state dog due to the breed's appearance as Toto in the film The Wizard of Oz.[15] In 2012, Representative Ed Trimmer tabled a bill proposing the Cairn Terrier as a state symbol.
Evidently PETA thinks it's a bad idea. :roll:

Yep the Lacy... pretty impressive little dogs if you've seen good ones at work.

Smart dogs for sure.
Smartest I have seen is a breed I was recently introduced too.
The McNabb heeler or shepherd as it is called. Hands down the most intelligent dog I have seen.

Virginia/State dog
American Foxhound

Virginia: American Foxhound. In 1966, the American Foxhound was made the official state dog of Virginia. This scent hound was developed to hunt foxes in early America.

Livestock Guardian Dog.
Used mostly on backyard goat and sheep endeavors where people don't want to shoot predators but instead want to run them over to their neighbors' places so they in turn can let their LGDs run the predator back over on to your place.
It's a really big booming business selling those kind of dogs.

I've had one eye open for a Lacy pup although I'm not looking for anything that has to work. Just a companion animal will fill my needs.
 
The computer tells me that only 13 states have an official state dog. None of the PNW states have one. I am thinking that Oregon would be split. Based on what I see riding around in the back of pickups, Eastern Oregon the dog would be the Border Collie. I am thinking that the greater Portland area would want it to be a toy poodle or maybe a labordodle.
 
A German immigrant from Frankfurt was credited with introducing Frankfurters to America in the 1860s and it was his wife's idea to put them on a bun in 1880 and sell them as hot dogs on the streets of St Louis.

So the Dachshund, aka wiener dog, would be a good State Dog for Missouri.

It's the one thing I trust governments to do, otherwise idol hands are the devil's workshop for them.
1st to have a state dog was Maryland with the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

Georgia, Bulldogs
Tennessee... I think the Bloodhound would be a good one
Kentucky probably Coon Hounds
and
Iowa, the Corn Dog aka Pronto Pups :)
