what are some ration recipes that that you guys would use on incoming cattle. most of our calves weigh 500-700 pounds. our current method is.
10# corn silage 40% dry matter
4# dry corn gluten
1.5# cracked corn
.5# 38% protein supp with urea and rumensin
.10 dry mollasses
free choice mineral
free choice fescue hay (they eat very little of this less than 2 pounds per day)
I think this ration is to low in energy but dad (who is the boss) says it's fine.

What % of crude protien is the urea? What level is the monensin at?

the protein supplement has 533.4 gm/ton of monensin. the tag says not more than 19% crude protein from non protein nitrogen
as I said earlier I feed this about .5 pounds per head per day

If it were me I would double the corn and double the protein supplement and drop the corn silage by 2 pounds. Let that monensin work better for you. Right now they are only getting about 134 mg of monensin per head per day. We feed at a rate of 400 mg per head per day. Also have you ever thought about adding a little bit of Tylosin in the protien supplement at a level of 120 g per ton. That will really help out with liver abscesses. Feeding as much roughage as you do maybe you have never needed either of these products. The more grain in the ration the more dependant you will become on these 2 products. But you can't beat monensin for feed efficiency it makes every feedstuff work better for you. Your urea level seems fine we feed at no more than 22% from non protien nitrogen. I've fed it at levels from 15% to 25% we seem to like it best at 22%.
