Squash...peak of ripeness

Does anyone have a sure fire way to tell when the butternut and spaghetti squash are ready for picking.
I use the color and size as a guide but get fooled every so often and get one that isn't quite ready,
Your help is appreciated.....Dave Mc

Hey Susy;The fingernail test is accurate.If your fingernail punctures the skin its not ready,if however it just leaves a dent in the skin/with pressure its ready.You'll still need to cure it out of direct sunlight outside for a couple of weeks before storing.-
