Springer???

Help Support CattleToday:

In my book a springer is a cow or heifer that is starting to bag just before she calves.
A springin' heifer is just that. Once she shows signs of an udder she is a springer

The only time I've ever heard the term "springer" is when the cows are getting close to calving. Up here, when the vulva starts getting loose and mucus starts showing, we say that a cow exhibiting those signs is "springing".

Any other definitions would be new to me. Sounds interesting, though.

Take care.

Could be one of those Yankee Heiferettes I read about on here.

In my area a springer is a heifer that is bred for the first time and a heifer that is bred the second time is a 2nd calf heifer. After that it's a cow. At least on my ranch.

Then is there the heiferette? Had a calf but didn't breed back to be a second calver?
