Good question. Can you pay $1000 for an 8 weight steer and feed him $6 corn and make anything? I do think you can sell that steer as a feeder and do good. I think we're in a time when you fellers with cows are going to make up a little lost ground, I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. So I guess I think fats have to move up even more to keep feeders where they're at. I'll go against the grain and call feeders a dime lower by spring. JMHO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hope they level off and stay consistant
it is similar to what corn did a few yrs ago made a big run then fell
I am with Larry on thinking they will be lower next spring I am hoping it is ONLY a dime
I would like to see consistant prices yr in yr out for 6 wts in the low $1.20s and that would let fats stay around the dollar mark
I would rather make a little money every yr than to make a killing for a yr or so then just break even or lose money for the next few yrs
CONSISTENCY is how we need to operate
 
Oldtimer, I hope you are right. I have 45 calves that will be ready to go after the first of the year and am trying to decide whether to feed them until spring or sell them. They will make a good profit now but maybe more later. Decisions, decisions. :help:

Interesting question and situation.Another factor is what would you have to spend to feed them until spring?

If you have feed available to use at little or no additional cost, I think what I would do is to hedge my bets, sell the heavier half/22 of them after the first of the year and feed out the lighter half/23 until spring.

If you have to make an additional cash investment to feed them to spring I would take a profit off of the table and sell them all. jmho.

The feed would have to be bought but with current pirces I can put the pounds on them for about .82 per pound. I know it will make money to keep them but my nerves get bad when cattle get this high. The trader in me says sell them while I know there is a profit. :cowboy:

Then sell them and don't second guess yourself. You won't go broke taking a known profit, even if there "MIGHT" be a larger profit later. Because there also MIGHT NOT. Good luck! Jim

Speaking as a cow-calf operator, I'd like to see close to $1.50 for 5 wts. Catch up on some of the losses from the last couple years, y'know. You asked what I wanted, didn't you? ;-)
 
I already got a $25,000 one and a $5,000 pup. :roll: ;-) Seems like I am the only one that thinks they are worth it. They are for sale if you want to get back in business. I would trade for 30 young cows. :nod:
