Spreading Fertilizer with ATV

Right now I dont have a tractor or a budget for one in the next few years. Just read the book "quality pasture" by Allen Nation. I want to start with 15 acres I have fenced off seperate. How practical is it to spread lime, gypsum and seed with a 100 pound ATV spreader. Paying someone to come do it will cost more than the $200 spreader. Also I am spraying remedy herbicide to kill of the mesquites, weeds and native grass. How long will this stay in the soil. Can I plant seed next year?
 
Fertilizer bought in bulk, as opposed to 50 pound bags should be a cheaper route. Is here anyway. I have spread with a cone spreader before with 50 bags. It don't make it right, but I have done it.
 
A buggy is a spreader pulled behind a truck?. I am uneducated in fertilizing pastures. First time since I took over my familys run down ranch. Has not been fertilized in over 20 years.

Your grasses are different from mine but I spread seed with a UTV every year. I spread fescue and clover. My spreader is a Moultre and it will hold 50 lb of seed and even more fertilizer. If its what you have to work with it may take longer but as an oldtimer told me once "whats time to a hog"
 
Thanks. Just found a fertilizer supplier that loans the spreader. The grass I will use the ATV spreader unless the seed man has one too.

How well does this seeder work? I have a old cone spreader for the tractor that's wore out and it's hard to set the gage on it to get the right amount of seed per acer.

If it's the elctric Moultrie it works pretty well but it only had a couple of settings for opening size.
The problem with broadcasting seed mixed with fertilizer is htat other then clvoer (and maybe alfalfa) you won;t get the same spread on the seed as you do with the fertilizer.
For doing lime, unless it's the pelleted (expensive) stuff it takes a pretty serious spreader the spread the lime without it screwing up the spreader because of the weight and how it packs in the spreader opening. To say nothign of the amount of power it takes to actaully broadcast the stuff.
 
I always spread my fertilizer with a buggy from the co-op. I have never mixed seed in With fertilizer I would like to find something to spread just seed with.
 
Had (well, guess I still have it) one of those Moultrie ATV seeders. Piece of crap. May be OK for fellers planting deer plots who don't care how much seed they put out... but trying to get it set to meter out the proper amount of grass or clover seed for pasture overseeding was an exercise in futility.
A Herd seeder is vastly superior for an ATV-mounted setup.

Just be careful with the Allen Nation stuff... have heard of some real trainwrecks from folks(especially dairy) who've tried to follow his 'lead'.

For uncoated clover seed a setting of one and about 5 mph will give you good coverage. I've done about 30 acres of pasture that way.

Remedy has no root zone activity from the start and so there is no residual. You can safely plant anytime after spaying Remedy.

Dun, it is an electric Moultre but I think it has 5 settings. I like it pretty good but im spreading it on pasture so it doesn't have to be perfect.
