Splitting Maul or Log Splitter

I was just wondering everyones opinion on which is there preference. I have both but rarely use my log splitter unless its a knotty piece i can't split or unless its hickory wood. What does everyone prefer ? I love splitting wood thats my weekend exercise.

Wedge and sledge, and a 3-1/2 lb ax is always what I use. Mostly cherry, hickory, ash, and oak is what I split.

30 years ago I used wedges, 10 years ago I went to a splitter

I use a maul except on pieces with about 18 inch diameters or bigger which I bust in half with wedges before using a maul to finish them off. If I have to hit a piece more than twice with the maul it means it's too knotty and I leave it beside the stump to decompose.

splitter you still get a good workout putting the logs on the splitter.an throwing them out of your way when they are splitt.

Used a splitter for the first time last year, I'll never do serious work with mauls and wedges again.

The question posted should be are you still young or feeling older?

Log splitter, never used one, I like an ax or maul, depending on the wood. I get stubborn and like to beat the knots :)

I am 32 maybe that makes a difference too..I split some big pieces of wood around 24" with a maul no wedge I posted one video of it on youtube.

That's pretty good skyhigh! You don't need a splitter. The most annoying part to me is standing the pieces up.

Thanks ga.prime...yea it is annoying and boy does my back feel it later that night and next morning but its a good workout so I continue to do it as much as i can.

Age makes a difference, also the amount of heft one has. The type of wood also is a huge variable. Try splitting elm with a maul, it's a big enough pain with wedges. I really used to like splitting alder. Upto about 24 inch if you just make a little score in it then wack it across the score at a 90 degree angle it will fly apart in 4 pieces. A maul is perfect for that.

It is a good workout. If one of my sons are around I'll get them stand the pieces up and I do all he busting.

Depends on the volume. I have 3 mauls and a 3pt hitch splitter.
I use about 50 cords a year or more if there's a tornado.

:shock: 50 cords a years! I may be your part of the country, but what makes you go though 50 cords a year? What all do you burn it for?

Western Oregon so not too cold to often, plus is 98 model house, good insulation and windows. On a heavy use year we go through 3 to 4 cords of fir, alder and maple.

Ours was on a point sticking out into puget sound, it was as much for the damp as the heat.
