Can anyone identify this? Bullyboy here is very healthy, grazes and drinks well, filled out nice at 8 months.

Was he born this way? I would guess some sort of a cleft pallet (sp) defect.

Thanks Dee and bward...Yes, this calf was born like this. I was not sure whether it is a cleft or something else...Have either of you ever seen anything like it? Is it genetic or ???

Wow! Interesting picture! I'd guess the same as the other two posters. And yes, probably genetic.

Watch out.. or you won't be able to sell any of your cattle to certain folks on the boards that keep track of that sort of thing.

Thanks for the pic!! I'm really suprized that this little fella doesn't have trouble grazing. Doesn't a cleft usually go all the way up into the sinusus?

Hi Sidney and BullLady,
We have a Simmi bull and an Angus bull, Bullyboy here is not going to breed. His mom though, is an old smoothmouth that will have more calves...waiting to see if they are cleft. Bullyboy makes a wheezing sound when he breathes sometimes, but not to a stressful level, maybe his sinuses are affected. I'll go take a better picture of him-he is solid as a rock, never been sick, shiny as a new car.

Cleft palate can show any degree of deformity. The split can be extreme, with the split extending far enough internally that the calf can't nurse, or it can be minimal, as with your calf. It just depends on how the dice rolled when this animal was first formed.

We had one that was split across, but that was because he got into an old sickle mower with his nose ring, and must have gotten it on something else about a week later....He looked like a dang catfish(after that-we had to use the nickname)! Now after that happened, we put the rings a little further in.

Wonderful pic. Learn something new everyday.
