Split Rims

Anybody change their own split rims? I beat apart a 10.00 by 20 last night and was thinking about putting it back together myself, haven't seen one done since I was 10 years old. Should I put some penetrating oil on the rims to help them slide back into place or just leave them dry? Already got a plan, put the tire/wheel behind my dump truck with the hose attached to the rim and a remote valve on the air line in front of the truck. Going to wrap a couple chains around the assembly and hold a round bale on the front end loader just over top of it. Any advice would be appreciated.

My only advice is get one piece rims. Or, do what I did and cut out the centers with a torch and weld them into solid rims.

Life is too short for split rims. No mechanic around here will touch them for anyone.

Try a big RV dealership for a replacement, they swap out wheels all the time.

yep if you can lose it i would..even after theyre mounted im always afraid of them things..KABOOM!

6 hole wheel or a 10 hole wheel? If its a 10 hole wheel its not likely a split rim, instead its a safety ring, which is not that dangerous.

It's a 10 hole. Has the wheel assembly and two rings, one of which is split. Wasn't really that hard to take apart.

Them kind ain't to bad cfpinz, just hook a log chain around it on both either side. I have fixed alot of that kind with no trouble.

We ALWAYS use a wire wheel to take off the rust and then we dont air them all the way up till we put them on the truck. Then we air them up. Still not a real safe design. You will get it no problem.

Put about 5 lb or so air make sure the safety ring is seated then put loader over tire with down pressure. I have a chuck that will clap on stem. I will stay away until filled.

I've changed a bunch of those,1. if the ring is bent junk it 2. clean it up good 3. use rim grease. All being said a 11by22.5 will run right beside 10by 20. Sounds like you have the inflation part good.

Stopped by the truck tire shop today to get a tube and liner, said they'd mount it for 12 bucks. Cheap enough.

Had a good friend get killed when the ring blew off after the tire was aired up and being mounted.
