Is there anyone out there who can tell me how to stop them from coming in our old farm house?? I know that all houses have them but these ones are big. Sometimes I think that they could carry off the kids!! Joking bout that but they are big, bout the size of a 50 cent piece and they seem to be everywhere. They especially like hanging out in the shower and waiting on me to hop in. Oh I just hate them. Any things to help????

;-)

Our grocery stores sell something called a hedgeball or something like that in the fall. Your supposed to put them around your basement and attic. I've never used them though.

Good Luck

Try spreading mothballs around. It can't hurt. It is supposed to keep out snakes, so why not spiders? Keeps dogs from pooping in the yard, too.

We had one place that was horrible with spiders. In a day the windows would be covered with multiple webs. Sprayed permethirin around the house once a month and the problem went away. The hay barn and shop still had tons of them but at least the house was free of them.

Eucalyptus (I don't think I spelled that right) will keep them away. I put a sprig in the cupboards, seems to work pretty well but need to replace it each year.

hedge apples is what we call them and we just find them out in the pastures but maybe some garden store or something will have them. Tehy are light green, hard and bumpy

i keep a pump up sprayer in the garage full of stout mixed up poison, its called Viper, i buy it at the feed store, i spray around all baseboards, doors, windows, vents, it keeps them out, i spray very often, as i am very afraid of spiders. we have spiders in the barn that makes a funnel looking web, they are evil looking, but the Viper kills em dead. we have spiders hanging out of the trees when evening comes, i call them big butt spiders, and i use the wasp spray that shoots out 20 or so feet. kills em dead too. the only ones i dont kill is the garden spiders, i just stay away from them, but they still give me the creeps.

I hate spiders too. I think, when you have lots of spiders the problem is, They are there for a reason. Spiders live on other insects. Work at controlling their food supply. In other words work year around at keeping flys, gnats, ants, and all insects under control. Good Luck.

I kinda agree with you on the "they are here for a reason" but when they are in the bathtub, I would really like to know the reason. There was approx. 10 in the tub this morning when I got up. I think they was wanting to have a hot tub party and was waiting for me to run the water!! :o I sucked them up with the vaccum and give them a whirlpool party instead!!!

;-)

I think I would be in the looney bin if I found ten spiders in the bathtub. I just have shivers thinking of it. I more than hate spiders. I have heard (but never tried) that bay leaves keep spiders out of your house.

Could put glue traps around if you don't like using chemicals.
Oh, thats sad :(

I don't mind spiders ~ I hate flies! I always carry them outside or put them in a plant.
When we lived in Alaska, we had a gazillion daddy long legs. My one year old daughter used to eat them like popcorn. Tried to stop her at first, then gave up. So, thats an option, find small child to eat them ;-)

If you hate flies why would you take them outside..............

We live with brown recluse spiders and have for 30 years. No poison we have found kills them but they can be managed with sticky traps under furniture and a good vacuuming of their hiding places every once in awhile. Of course, you have to be aware when you are picking things up in dark closets, etc.

Spiders are hard to kill. My guess is that you might be killing some but then getting another hatch. I got an infestation in the garage a while back but I finally took em out with weekly treatments for about three weeks. You might want to try Cyfluthrin if you have a license and they haven't pulled it off the market. You can get it in an aerosol fogger, just hit the button and leave the house. If you are unable to find this, you can get a mosquito fogger from the hardware store and pour a little Dursban or Malathion, or Diazinon in it and give it a go. I'd recommend closing a room off and spraying while you are in the next room and work your way from room to room until you exit the house. As always, use good judgement when you are spraying insecticides.

We have found that the glue traps work great too. Since we started using them, it cut way down on the amount of spiders we have seen in the house.

I would a lot rather live peacefully and sensibly with spiders than spray poison all over my living quarters. The long term effects of such practices will rear their heads someday.

Use a spray like permethrin around the outside of your house and under your eaves. Permethrin has a short residual and is also designed to break down by the sun and heat after a short while. Do this as was stated be an earlier poster about once a month. Diazonon and Dursban are no longer manufactured (thanks to the EPA) and you probably can't find them. Viper and Demon are also very good for this and other insect problems. There are other chemicals that will work just as well.

Be sure and read the label. Mix as stated and do not mix it stronger than label directions. There is no sense in over kill. A dead bug is just as dead when killed according to the label.

I are a bug man.

JW, I'm a fan of Permethrin and use it in the garden and for backrubs. I reached for this to control the spider outbreak in the garage and it did little to nothing. Sprayed several times. Checked my manual and permethrin is not labeled for spiders.

Though its true you can't buy Dursban you can buy Chlorpyrifos which is "dursban". Bought several cases last spring. Don't understand how or why.
