2 years ago we bought a bought calf at the salebarn split off a starving missing teeth old cow. The calf was skinny around 2 weeks old. That heifer was easy to bottle train. Easy to get eating grain. She is a good eater and good doer. My daughter showed her. She was never on show feed and never got more than 8 pounds of creep feed a day. As a 6 month old calf she was reserve grand champ commercial heifer at our county fair. At a year old she was grand breeding heifer at our local show beating out the registered heifers. Since then she has won her class but not placed in grand. She was not fat enough which I'm ok with as the last show a month ago I thought she was ready to birth. She was pasture bred to a shorthorn. She is a beefmaster. She is 25 months now. On Thursday at 3 pm she was swishing her tail. We left to go buy feed. At 5:30 the feet were out and they were huge. After 30 minutes she made no progress and was looking a bit tired. We pulled him. Took 5 minutes maybe. That is a 16 year old girl and a 50's momma. So not too hard to pull. 87 pound bull calf. Solid red. Momma is doing great. She has an udder to rival a dairy cow. Calf is good. About 2 hours later he was trying to jump around. I'm trying to decide.If I will just breed her to our clean up bull (he is by an ultrablack bull out of a commercial red Angus cow. 70 pound bw) or AI her. If I did AI I'm thinking beefmaster or ???. Any suggestions? I pasture bred her last year as I have never seen her in heat and didn't want to sync her. Do you think her years would be more obvious since she has had a calf? Not looking to breed back until June. My daughter will graduate next year so her show steer days are coming to an end but I think this heifer is good enough to raise some club calves for other kids to show so I want to maximize the value of her calves.
