Special Cow Sale, 5/20

Our local salebarn had a special cow sale last night after the normal Monday sale. I went to watch and get an idea as I'm looking to pick up a few more cows in the next couple of months. There were some real fancy commercial cows there in fact probably more good cows than any other special sale I've seen.

I watched a pen of 11 black 2nd stage cows bring $1530/hd and another bunch of the same bring $1425. Some reds of the same quality almost got to the blacks at I believe $1510. Lots of young pairs with baby calves only a couple weeks old bringing $1700-1800. It seemed to me that the calf market has cooled down a bit locally but the replacement market is booming around here.

That's about 300$ a head more than the prices at the regular sales down this way, and also the reason I don't buy a lot of cows at special sales.

I was surprised at the bidding. Around here it seems most hold their cows for a special sale and only send pound cows to a regular sale. I was at Cuba a couple months ago at a special cow sale and they were around $100 and a lot of the time $200 cheaper than Salem was the Friday before.

I attended the local sale barn’s “Back to Farm” sale a couple weeks ago, and those prices are similar to what I saw, for the top end. I had made note of 3 pairs that I like the best, but apparently everyone else thought the same. They brought $1750-2100/pair, way more than I could justify. Low end was around $1000 a pair, but that was a crazy young hereford w/ bull calf, and a corrient looking pair. The average for pairs was probably around $13-1400, bred cows were just slightly less so I opted for pairs. Though the prices were higher, the overall the quality was much better than the normal sale, and the stress level for the cows and calves was a lot lower too since there were so few animals compared to a normal sale. What was so surprising was how cheap the bulls sold. What I felt were very nice registered yearling angus bulls were only bringing $1400-$1700. A large group of cleaned and clipped charolais bulls sold for less. All bulls passed their BSE before selling, that ones that failed sold later for burger.

They only had a couple of bulls last night but they were in the $1300-$1800 range. The quality wasn't there on the bulls but the cows were outstanding. I sure wish I had another farm and some of those cows turned out on it today. Big money though, no doubt.

There has been sevarel good tested bulls at the regular sale here at Ava the last few weeks and they have been bringing 1800$ to 2700$ for young bulls. It's really surprised me how much some are willing to give for a un registered bull at the sale.
