Soy hull shortage??

Are soy hulls in short supply in your area? We feed a little feed and most of the mix is soy hulls. Mill was out yesterday as was another nearby along with one of the biggest grain elevators around here. Thought they might have to get some from Iowa. Just wondering what was causing this.

Well beans have tumbled hard (over a dollar) in the last few days because supposedly we had a record crop last year.

Seems like byproducts have been tight, for some reason, we gave $105 for corn gluten pellets a week ago and had a quote for distillers at $114. I thought the distillers would have increased in supply where a lot of the hog guys quit using it because of vomitoxin levels. Shows what I know.

Larry bean meal has been what I consider "overpriced" for several years now...this causes alternatives to be overpriced just because they can do it and get away with it. Has nothing really to do with supply and demand.....but a lot of the by-products are being used in an attempt to replace soy as the primary protein source. DDG is one thing I found last week that was in short supply down here. Couldn't get it at any price. A lot of horse feeds are utilizing it instead of the bean meal, not to mention cattle feeds. The same for corn gluten etc. I'm sure. You'd think wheat midds would be plentiful as everybody is still eating bread but down here they are in short supply as well....

everybody looking for cheaper feed has driven the price up of the cheaper ingredients.

A fundamental supply and demand issue is the amount of Canola meal not being exported from Canada to the US. (I believe there is only one plant cleared to export meal at the moment, the rest will be late winter or early spring before they get the green light again.) Doesn't directly affect the beef industry, as it tends to go into dairy rations, but that shortage of high-quality protein source will put upward pressure on some of the other byproducts. It's probably not the reason, but it may be a contributing factor.
