We usually do most of our sorting on foot. We have the corral setup to do it that way. But we had one big bunch of cows 150-160 head that we needed to sort a group out of. With that many head we changed our ways a bit, and I used my mare. She's a pretty good ranch horse and LOVES to cut cattle, so we gave her the chance to do it. Once we got them in, and they were very difficult today as far as that went (first hot day of the year and it was windy) we let them settle and find their calves for a bit, and we went for a break and a drink. Came back in about an hour, and started peeling them off. The main bunch went back out to their original pasture, and they will likely get moved away from the yard tomorrow or the next day. The smaller bunch that are getting hauled away, just went into a small pen to the side or stayed in the holding pen. I was actually quite happy with how they handled, cows are quiet though, so that helps. Took us around 2-2 1/2 hours to finish up. Didn't even have anything end up in the wrong pen. And with the wind, I'm sure it was a lot less dusty this way!
We had one Trio in the bunch, and I wasn't sure how I was going to get them organized and out the gate together, but she showed a lot of the other mothers up, about half way through she brought her pair out of the herd and headed for the gate. No problems... Impressive, when there were a lot of mom's of one that couldn't get one calf organized...
