My son came to go deer hunting last Friday. Brought his youngest daughter with. That 11 year old girl is a deer spotting machine. Season opened on Saturday. All he was seeing was spikes and 2 points. Today would have been his last day to hunt. Yesterday morning he headed up the hill on the quad with his daughter, Just coming daylight. They were still well short of their planned hunting spot. The girl spotted some deer. He stopped the quad. Sure enough some bucks. A 4 point turned broadside. One shot. The deer was up hill about 200 yards. An easy drag down to the quad. There was a bit of a bank on the edge of the road. Backed the quad into it and slid the deer on to it. She held the horned and he pulled the hind quarters around. She had to ride the 5 miles or so home half sitting on the deer. They are both happy campers.

Mule deer and elk are referred to by number of points in each side. Mule deer are generally 4 points, or 4x4 when mature unless atypical. Elk can go from spike (yearling) to usually 3x3 as a two-year old, then 4x4, 5x5 then mature as a 6x6 ("royal" and fairly common) 7x7 ("imperial" occasional) and up to 8x8 ("monarch" very rare - never have seen one).

So. do muleys and elk never have an unequal number of points., like white tails do?

Whitetails are a total of their points... except most call 1 single on each side as a spike....and they often have an odd number on one side... but if 4 and 3 it is called a 7 point, etc.
I shot several whitetails in NE Washington where we have whitetail. In the east they would be considered 8 points. In the west the eye guard or brow tine aren't counted. So those 8 point eastern count whitetails I shot would be called a 3 point western count.
