The IRC is a non profit that helps to settle refugees. "[In] 1933 [the]American branch of the European-based International Relief Association (IRA) founded at the suggestion of Albert Einstein to assist Germans suffering under Hitler. Refugees from Mussolini's Italy and Franco's Spain are later assisted." More history at http://www.theirc.org/about/history.html.
According to this article the US accepts only 70,000 per year and that after 9/11 the numbers were cut to 27,000. Not sure what it is now. I know it is not easy to immigrate, much less come to a new country as a refugee from war or other disaster. I have a close relative married to a citizen of another country and they are currently going through the he77 of doing the legal paperwork.
Anyway,Tucson AZ, despite the fact that Raytheon is the major employer, is a rather liberal town. Perhaps because of the large native Hispanic population, or just contrarians settling in the desert, the place is pretty tolerant and accepting. Many refugees and immigrants have made new homes there. This is about the "Lost Boys of Sudan" http://www.theirc.org/news/somali_bantu ... tates.html
Read about them and then check out the IRC website and learn about other efforts to help people.
