Sad they died but definitely not heroes in my book. The way we've diminished the value of the word some even say Bruce Jenner is a hero for wearing dresses. I think not.

Maybe I'm I little biased because it was local.
They were all soldiers with several tours to Iraq and Afghanistan between them.
The sergeant had four. To me that qualifies.
If your opinion is different fine.
If you want to compare them to bergdal.
Go hump a stump.....

Agree with you , Jo.
Seems like this day and time anybody you like is a hero and if you don't like them they are classified as cowards.
Calling so many people hero today just diminishes the honor that should be reserved for the truly heroic of times gone by. Not saying that there are not true heroes today.

No but just because you put on a uniform doesn't make you a hero either. Today is "D-Day". Those men that stormed that beach were and always will be HERO'S.

I worked with two guys years ago. Both had been drafted and sent to Vietnam. One spent his tour there driving a forklift in a warehouse. The other one was a little guy who they made into a tunnel rat. They both wore the uniform. They both served in a war zone. Which one is a hero?
I do remember who the tunnel rat said was a hero. His story was that a North Vietnamese gunner was using him for machine gun practice (he had the scars to show for it). He said the biggest blackest guy he ever knew ran out across 20 yards of open ground to drag him back to safety. Tunnel rats said that man is his hero.

That guy has my vote too. We all can't be heroes just like we all can't be winners. Nothing wrong with not being a hero but we needn't diminish the word by saying everyone is a hero or a winner. As for the guy that climbed in those tunnels, he might not be a hero but I will say he's got a set of balls that deserves our utmost respect.
 
Hero may be a poor semantic word. Personally I feel that almost anyone that puts on the uniform knowing the chances of going into combat and are willing to die for OUR freedoms is at a minimum brave or courageous. Then you get to the awkard part in that just because I spent 30 years in the military and saw more than enough combat, I don;t consider myself a hero. Sonny Breedlove and Niles Dick were heros.
I agree the term hero is bandied about too much, sounds like the old russian cartoons where everyone wore a ribbon saying hero.
