Some Calf Photos

Snapped some pics yesterday as I checked the herd. I'll post 1 of my red heifers I named after orange soda pops, Ms. Crush and I'll get a few other calf pics added later. Ms. Crush is a purebred Simmental out of two black parents our Invasion son and a Power Stroke MR MT grand daughter.

She's alright, seem mighty curious about that shirt or whatever it is! For my taste she's a little light on the meat to frame ratio, but I have one like her too and still think she'll make a good cow

She is 6 months old. It's my UK cap, I had pitched it down there to get her attention a bit from grazing and moving so much. She had got through the fence to eat on the pond bank and was enjoying her time there.

Here is a 3/4 quarter Black Simmental. She is the first calf out of a Reg. Simmental Bull I raised and sold as a herd bull. She is 3 months old.

I think both could develop real nicely. Only time will tell.

Yes, we raise a few Register Purebreds. Have 42 Adult Females on the Farm. 9 are Register Purebred Simmentals, 8 blacks and 1 red. Several more are bred right up to purebred status but haven't registered any of them. This red heifer posted is a calf from 1 of the black register females out of a Reg. Invasion son. We're mostly still in the commercial cow calf business but we'll keep a few bulls or heifers out of those Register Females and sell as breeding stock. Plus we'll keep a couple for replacements if we're culling something. We will buy register heifers as well sometimes for different pedigree's. We're moving toward a purebred seed stock operation but gradually. We've got some nice commercial cow families that have been in the herd well before my time and even my dad's time, therefore we'll continue to use those females but mate them with Register Simmentals. The farm has been in the family from 1 generation to the next since the revolutionary war.

You don't tag them till later? The second calf looks nice, but I'd take it with red paint preferably :)

Tags are made out, Vaccines and Fly Tags are here, trying to line up enough help to work the whole herd. With any luck they will be sporting their tags by Memorial Day. We use to catch them, tag them, and band them the first few days after birthing. The Dams and the calves seem to be more trustworthy to us by waiting. Nesikep, reds are my favorites as well, but the black is growing on me. As long as they are good, I don't pick on their color.

While they will certainly change as they grow, they are starting out very well. It will be interesting to see them when weaned, and when a yearling if you are keeping them....but looking good so far. I prefer the black heifer over the red at this point, but between now and when they are breeding age, they can look vastly different. Nice job!

We fall calve are herd so we won't have calf pics for about three months. We are mostly commercial Simmental though we have a few registered cattle. I enjoy your pictures! Mel
