Tomorrow is supposed to reach a -39 degrees Celcius windchill.

Well, nobody said calving season is all roses and sunshine, eh? ;-)

Time to check the cows again.

She's not going to. They're going to start exporting it south on thursday. Not as severe but that's pretty much relative. It was 70 yesterday supposed to be in the high 60s today and tomorrow then highs in the 20s for the next week.

It is -38 F. I just noticed the other day that we were "celebrating" the 10 year anniversary of the coldest temp. ever recorded in Minnesota. It was -60 F. on Feb. 9 1996. Even you Canucks have to admit that's a bit chilly.

The conversion chart says that -39 Celcius is equal to -38 Farenheit.

This little yearling heifer doesn't seem to be bothered..lots of hair and a full belly go a long way to comfort.

A few of the older calves lounging in a calf-shelter. Snug as bugs in a rug.

Smart old cow. She was curious about what I was up to, but wasn't coming out into the wind.

The Rockytop Ranch Ritz. The new calves and the girls that I'm expecting to burst today (due to the barometric pressure dropping) are enjoying a chance to muck up the barn.

This big calf (120lb) in the corner has definately figured out where the groceries are coming from. He was suprisingly lively given the size he was when he hit the ground.

The answer is the 'Haymobile'.

I've got her plugged in as we speak, and in about half an hour or so, I'll be warm and toasty while using the winch, block and tackle set-up along with the deck mounted bale stabbers that Honey rigged up to set out the bales for the day.

Before that it was the cuss'n'fuss method. :roll: The old Case is mighty tempermental about firing up in anything colder than minus five or so.

Wow! I don't think I could function in that cold of weather, I'd just freeze solid. I't amazing that the little babies can handle it, they don't have a lot of fat cover when they come out. Thanks for the pics!

They didn't wait til Thursday - Woke up to 9" of snow this morning. We now have better than a foot, temp is 19 with a wind chill of -4 and winds of around 20 miles an hour. Supposed to get another 4-6" tonight and snow through Monday at least.

I would almost be wililng to take the snow at this point. The rain we had in august was just enough to make things better for a little while. The drought is still going strong.

We're lucky to have had two inches of snow on monday, put a nice layer of insulation on the pasture. Have had the tank heaters in all week been getting down to 10 F at night and now the Canuck Express is scheduled to hit tonight and bring it down below zero. Not expected to get above freezing for the rest of the month. Glad we don't start calving until Mar 9th.
Old Arthur is letting me know the weather is going to change for the worse.

You people sure do it tough in winter. We whinge about the cold here sometimes,but nothing to whinge about,seldom snows and don't get as bad a wind chill factor. Keep warm.

We'll be right with you CattleAnnie. With windchill we're expecting -38 Celsius tomorrow. I put out lots of straw this week so I'm hoping. Such a change from last week's +12 that it's tough on the cows.:( Had a calf today that was pretty chilly, thankfully the mom's good and let me tuck it in a big straw nest. Mom's on night shift and I'm just praying I don't get called out to warm up a calf. Oh well, at least we don't have to worry about snakes. I tell myself that whenever I freeze my butt off! :lol:

Yep, the snow has been pretty crunchy around here the past couple of days as well. About -27C or -39C with the windchill tonight. I've got a couple of cows that are close to calving. I'm hoping they wait past this cold snap. My cord for my trough heater somehow got wrapped up and the trough heater flipped sideways and burnt a whole right through the side of my big plastic trough. I'm scratching my head about how I'm going to fix that in this weather. I don't even have a heated shop to work in. Take care.
