when being stopped by an officer? Here's what I do now. Mind you I don't get stopped very often but when I do the first thing is turn off the engine, pull out all the paperwork (license, insurance, concealed carry permit, etc) and have them ready. Next thing is roll all the windows down and turn on the interior lights so the officer can see everything. Next, when asked if there was any reason for ……… (what ever I am being stopped for) and NOT argue. Last time I got pulled over for speeding I cracked a joke and got the officer to laugh. In this case it worked and I got sent on my way without a ticket.

The joke was " ..yes sir, the reason I was speeding is because my ex wife ran off with an officer from (plug in the county, state, etc) and I thought you were trying to bring her back".

I do what others have said. And give the officer respect. If he starts being a dickhead for no reason then I will withdraw my respect. I do not break the law. I have been pulled a lot for no reason whatsoever. They always say I was acting suspicious.

Truck off, lights on, hands on the steering wheel. Yes sir no sir. Haven't had a ticket in 15 years
That works fine with sheriffs dept, but not with THP. If they pull you over you are getting a ticket. They are nice, but do not give warnings.

I've made it to the point where the police and I have a mutual agreement of respect for each other. But Lord help the young kids, I think their trying to indoctrinated kids into socialism or something. The Tequesta Fl. cops verbally assaulted my son for 2 hours on a traffic stop. He received no tickets, and just a illegal search of his truck. We made a special 6 hour trip just to find out what the true story was. And because he wouldn't look at the cops they thought he was hiding something. A cop has no right to hold a kid up for 2 hours for nothing. I should of pushed the issue more, but I told them they overstepped their authority and they owe my son an apology. We all shook hands and parted ways on good terms. Respect works both ways.

Other than getting pulled over for a expired (by 1 day) inspection sticker, I haven't been stopped since 1983.Things have changed a lot since then. I'd do exactly what others have said, and turn on the little go pro cam.

Pretty much the same as the others have suggested, but there are some real b@*stards out there.

We had one rather unpleasant experience with a state trooper in Nebraska while enroute to Michigan a number of years ago.
After keeping my husband in the back of the squad car for half an hour, and being a total jerk the entire time. He never explained himself, never apologized for keeping us so long, never even a "hey, you folks have a safe trip". We hadn't done anything wrong, just chose the wrong exit to get off to let the dog out!

Same trip, coming home 6 weeks later, young cop stops us for speeding in Cheyenne. Told him the speedo went out while we were gone, and had to gauge speed based on the tach. He let us off with a warning, said to be sure to get it fixed when we get home. Nice as could be, wished us a pleasant evening, and sent us on our way. Heck, we wouldn't have been upset if he had given us a ticket, (well maybe a little :D ), 'cause he was polite and courteous the whole time without the "us against them" mentality that can be so prevalent amongst police.

You were in Neb with Colo plates.....................nuff said.

BTW Wyoming under the same circumstances can have the same outcome.

Too True, 3way!
Still po'd about it though and it was 8 years ago.
I haven't actually been pulled over in about 20 years, but hubby has a handful of times. He did get 2 tickets in Wy, but they were at least nice about it!

Dammed greenies

I'm always polite as well...
My friend on the other hand.. not so much.. he's been pulled over so many times for vehicle inspections and etc that he was getting sick of it.. they'd always be finding something. Mostly a cracked windshield.. you try keeping a good windshield in a vehicle here... last week he got 5 chips in his windshield on this way home. He told the cop he's not fixing it until spring. Certainly, a week later he got pulled over again, he called the guy Constable D!ckhead right to his face and told him he was sick of being harassed.
I think the cops have left him alone for quite some time now!

Last time I got pulled over I had just left work feeling sick. I told him that he better step back or I might puke on his shoes. He let me go with a warning.

Been a while since I was stopped for anything but always pull over, turn on inside light if it is after dark, get proof of insurance and put both hands on the steering wheel....answer to all questions is yes sir or no sir.

But there was one time:

Officer: You drinking?
Me: You buying??
Both of laughed and laughed...
Me: I need bail money.
