Sneaking a drink

last night I went out to ckeck on a heifer that was caughing at evening feeding, she is OK, probably got some alfalfa candy in her snoot, same one that caughed three times before each feeding.
I found a seven and a half month old steer that I thought was weaned sneaking a drink from his mama...never noticed this during the day and her udder should have dried, weaned in October, seperated for five weeks. She's starting the third trimester. Seperated them again and this morning I let them be together...oh yeah right to the teat...found him a pen buddy and we'll try it again, one more time, if not then he'll become some after Christmas foldin money. Makes you pretty frustrated when you see that, doesn't it? I weaned four calves that were on my nurse cow this past spring and then put another set of calves on that cow. After about 8-10 weeks of separation, I tried running the cow and both "sets" of calves on one pasture...nope. Weaned calves took one look at "momma" and her new calves, and their snouts were covered in milk in record time. :roll: I've decided calves that were on a nurse cow have to be separated for at least twice as long as single cow/calf pairs.

Those calves sold pretty well though. :lol: ;-)
