I know Velpar is the recommended herbicide for smut grass, but has anybody had any luck keeping it in check by disking it? I have been told it helps, and that it doesn’t.

We tried disking it. You are better off to spray it one clump at a time with roundup if you can. 2% mix will kill it then mow it. Still fighting that stuff!!

Good luck.

We used it on bahia grass, it didnt hurt the bahia any at all. The drawback for us is the cattle have to be off of it for 60 days after application. Sprayed it in a pasture two years ago, it is back already. I think cutting it for hay works better.. We did that on a different pasture and it looks cleaner than the one we sprayed. We have clump sprayed it with roundup that works too.

jscunn,

I agree with what you are saying about haying it, but do you feed the hay yourself or sell it? I really didn't want that stuff in my hay to scatter the seed when I feed it.

The label changed. You can now graze it immediately after spraying as long as the rate is 4.5 pints per acre or less, which is the reccomended rate for smut grass.

I read an article recently that indicated some benefit to burning it. That might prevent the seed from germinating. I think it should be killed first with glyphosate then burned. Anybody burned? Results?
