Anyone have a smoker big enough to smoke a pig in ? Or to smoke, cook any kind of meat on ? I have a peace of 1/2 inch thick x 38 inch diameter pipe x 5 foot long that I came by several years ago with intentions of making a smoker out of it. Trying to get some ideas on designing. Have the most important part of the design figured out. Know exactly where to park the trailer containing the keg so that it’s handy to fill frosted mugs while the smoker is doing its job. 😉

Now farmerjan 😊 that's not funny. That's just a sly attempt to get some ideas on how to build the smoker and the mentioned possible draft beer that will accompany the smoker when I get it built. See then the rest of the plan is to invite everyone for a big steak dinner and the way I see it as high is steaks are now. If i furnish the smoker and give everyone the illusion I will furnish the beer too. And get everyone else to bring coolers of steaks, I can explain to them that I forgot to go get the kegs but I can start grilling the steaks while they go get the kegs I forgot to get !!! 😉 Lord knows there’s no better place to solicit steaks for a party than on a cattle forum !!! 😁

It’s plenty heavy alright. I have seen smokers made out of pipe like I have that are mounted on a trailer. Most have doors to open in order to access the grill top. That’s a real common design.

I am considering building mine like a water smoker. Instead of building it horizontal I am thinking about building it standing up vertical.

Building a square fire box with a grate to burn wood on then adding a water pan to generate steam. Even considering not having a door on the pipe. But a a dome top that can be lifted by cable to take it on and off.

I think it could be possible to cook a whole 100 lb pig in it at once. ( that’s 100 lb before it’s been gutted and should weigh closer to 75 lb’s, but still a be chunk of meat. )

And am thinking about building round rakes that would fit inside the pipe sort of like grill tops that’s spaced a foot or so apart vertical up. The racks would have to be removable so that you could load one rack at a time starting with the bottom rack, then the rack above it and so on.

They have a big steak cooking competition in I think the place is called Magnolia Arkansas every year that I have wanted to go see just to look at different designed smokers to get some ideas before I build mine.

That’s called the Magnolia Blossom festival that’s held I guess around the first of May every when the Magnolia trees are in bloom. Just looked it up and it was held on May the first this year. If I was computer savvy enough I would post it on here but I have a hard enough time just logging on CT let alone posting the Magnolia Blossom schedule. But it interesting for sure. It’s like a week long event with a lot of things happening at it. Steak cook off competition is one of its biggest events. Winner of that event wins a few thousand dollars ? I think ?

Aaron Franklin knows a good bit about smokers but he originally bought his main one from someone else.

For a heavy horiz offset, it's pretty easy to deal with the heavy lid. Make a counterweight for it. Some people incorporate a winch and pulley too.

I worked for a machine shop owner that designed and built a big dia tall offset smoker but he put a 2in diameter shaft in the middle with rotating shelves because he was mostly interested in smoking whole hams and briskets. We had heck building it but it did work great and after work, the brisket would be great, the refrigerator came open and the free beer did flow. Only problem was we had to drink the same thing he drank.
