Ok all you diesel experts out there.....................give me your opinions...........

Got my trusty ole Ford F450 super duty with a diesel engine in it.......and I use the highway fuel in it of course, but more and more lately it is beginning to blow black smoke in greater quantities out during acceleration, especially under load...much more then is what I would think is normal.

Any ideas of possible causes and the fix for same? Have tried additives such as diesel medic etc to no avail..
Thanks for your responses! :cboy:

Start with simple things first. Check your air filter. Might try new fuel filters too. Is it down on power or have you noticed a decrease in mileage? Black smoke from a diesel is unburnt fuel. If it can't get enough air to burn it in the cylinder to produce work, it will come out the back. As far as more complicated (expensive) problems- Could be overfueling-possible pump or electronics problem. Could be the turbo (probably less likely). Not sure if you have a waste gate or some other way to control boost from the turbo. Not familiar with Diesel Medic brand, but generally stay away from most fix-it additives. Most don't help, some do more harm than good. If the filters don't fix it, probably need to plug it in to find out what is going on. You could throw a lot of money at it replacing things till you find it by chance. Plugging it in to the computer should eliminate most of the wasted time and money. Good Luck. Let us know what you find.
