Simm Show Heifer (Pictures)

This PB Simm heifer was born 1/9/07 and her birth weight was 79lbs.
We were thinking about her being in our show string, I know that she is a lighter red color and that can be a challenge in our area but I know it's not such a problem in other areas of the country.
What does everyone think.

Not a bad looking little heifer, but she might be a little to leathery up front for a Show heifer in my opinion.

But if you really enjoy showing what you raise, I am sure you can have fun at a local level with her. We always end up showing a heifer that is not a world beater just because my daughter like to take one from a baby in the field to the fair.

Hopefully we are improving our calves so our home grown quality will be better.

That's what we usually do. Buy a couple and take a decent home raised one or two.
 
I'm not an expert on the breed, but I think a little extra 'leather' is a breed characteristic?

Which should not hurt if she shows against other simmies but could be a problem in interbreed classes.

I like the look of her. Nice stout heifer. Possibly a bit high in the tail head. A good clip job will really fine down her front end.

She does have a little extra neck but not as bad as the picture lets on, she still has alot of baby fuzz so hopfully a good clip will take care of most of it. She will be showing against other simms so I think that it will be ok, if that is the worst thing that the judge can pick on then I feel pretty good.
 
I personally prefer the red coated Simmentals. Primarily because the black hided animals tend to have more heat stress here in Texas than red.

I also have a Remington daughter.. here's a pic of her. They must tend towards the "leather" on the neck, as mine has some of that as well.

I'm going to put a halter on mine... I'd say go for it with yours as well!

Ironic you should mention, I was paying a little extra attention to the pastures on my drive home Friday. It was around 80 something degrees at the time and all the pastures with black cattle (aside from those that were Brahman influenced which were mainly Brangus around that area) were standing and laying beneath the trees while the red calves were out grazing. I was just thinking about that before I opened up this thread.

Traditionally, Simmentals do have a little extra flab, but around here they are VERY clean fronted. (think shorthorn) Even though its the least of my worries when picking a calf, some judges really hate it. Anyway, aside from that, that little heifer could do well, and if its common around your parts to have a little more neck, even better. Good Luck with her.

hey! i completely agree. i remember when i was doing some work with maine anjous and i had a look on the net and they were all black. BUT i must say ive seen some NICE limousins.
