I notice this morning that my steer is not behaving normal. He is not eating feed or grazing. Yesterday he was grazing normally all day. I am not sure what is wrong with him. He is 1 years old. His stool is normal.
 
Is he breathing normally? Did you take a temp reading of him? How is his behaviour not normal: sulky, keeping separate from the rest of the herd, etc, snotty nose, sweaty-looking? Maybe he swallowed some hardware...or something else is wrong...?
 
he is just walking slow and sitting around. He is not out grazing and being active like usual. His temp. is normal.
 
other than not eating and not being active he seems fine. no temp, breathing fine, but he has thin out some in the last week. Our pasture is thinning out for grazing. We raise goats to and they eat the grass low. We have been letting the steer in the yard to graze since the grass is longer. We did change feed in the last few weeks. Could that change is eating and weight loss.
 
The last time we bought feed, we bought whole and cracked corn. and instead of the beef pellets we usually buy, we got 10% grain, sweet feed.

OK, for this steer, what was he on before the change, and what has he had since - per day by pound of each feed item?
 
Before is was on beef pellets, cracked corn and grazing. about 2 weeks ago we bought sweet feed, cracked and whole corn. he is in the pasture 24/7. He feeds with the 7 goats. They graze all day and get feed every other day about 2 - 3 pounds of feed. Plus we been giving them a bail of hay a day since the pasture are thinning out. Since we notice him getting thin the last few days, we been letting him feed in the yard where the grass is longer. No goats been grazing there. He has 5 acres to graze on.

Any toxic plants for livestock in your yard? Weeds, shrubs, trees, landscape plants?

You have to have an idea what feed is going into your steer, if you have got a goat/steer sharing formula worked out then fine.

I know nothing about goats but here is a link to a thread on this same board and you should read what milkmaid says if you haven't already.

You are dealing with some hot feeds and you have to keep in mind that a cows guts are a chemical process. You can't phart around too much too quickly without usually paying a price.

It sounds like to me its acidosis. We did buy the 10% grain sweet feed. The bag did say it was for cattle, horses, goats.
He is doing a little better today. He is starting to graze again but not eating feed. Does anyone have a suggestion for a feed and hay mixed.
