Has anyone ever heard of a sick cow vomiting up its grain or hay? I have a cow in the sick pen because she is very skinny. I gave her a little corn and some alfalfa but she did not touch it. When she did finally try it she vomited it all back up.

I went ahead and wormed her a few days ago. When she did not get any better I gave her a shot of LA 200 today.

Anyone ever seen this before?

How about more info on the cow?

age?
how long has she been 'sick'?
manure consistency?
is she pregnant, lactating, fresh, etc?
have you checked her mouth?
 
Is it possible maybe that she has a blockage? How does her breathing sound?
Have had calves drool profusely when sick.
 
Sorry for not giving more information.

She is a Hereford. I am not completely sure of her age since I work for her owner. I think she is around 5 years old. She had a calf last May and milked well but it has been weaned and sold.
We actually just put her in the sick pen Monday because we thought she looked awlful thin compared to the others around her. I have not looked into her mouth and her manure is runny.
 
This is just an oddball, but did you use a grubacide on her in the past month or two?

Johnes cows don't "vomit" up their food.. they eat but pass it quickly.

I would suspect a blockage also. If she can't swallow, she's only getting what ever she can drink into her system, which would explain the diarreha. I'd have a vet check her mouth / throat.
 
"symptoms" do NOT sound like Johnes - they eat a bunch, it just comes out faster than they can process it, so they lose lots of weight. Of course, they do quit eating just before dying. If she had reached that point and they were just NOW being concerned, then yes, it could be Johnes - BUT I SERIOUSLY DOUBT that anyone could possibly NOT NOTICE a cow as sick as she would have to be before now.
Time for a vet.
 
Thanks to everyone for the information.

The problem here is that the gentlemen I work for (who owns the cow) says that she will either come out of it, die, or go to the cull truck. He has decided he is not calling the vet.

I personally struggle with this ! I will keep you posted on what happens.

My first vote would be a bullet, second would be the cull truck.
 
Been there before. Economically it's a good idea 99% of the time... it's just frustrating for someone like you who's curious what's actually wrong with the animal. :lol: I've been known to spend more than an animal is worth just because I want to know what's wrong and why, and then I just chalk it up to another bit of information I had to pay to learn. For instance, I took a sick holstein bull calf (worth next to nothing) to the vet clinic a few months back because I wanted to learn how to IV a calf. :P Was worth it to me.

Been there done that worn that tshirt.
