Calf has a cough, labored breathing and is lethargic. She is not nursing very much, head hangs quite a bit. She has been treated twice by me at my vets advice, bantamine and something else both times as well as penicillin the last time. Icant remember which drugs we used, one was supposed to be more of an anti inflammatory and the other for the cough, etc. Any advice on what is wrong with the calf and what to do next?
 
Last 2 times I had a calf with respiratory problems. My vet recommended Draxxin expensive about 17 dollars for 1 or 2 ccs enough to treat a 300 lb calf. 1 dose and both calves showed no symptoms 24 hrs. later. good luck
 
Is it a large animal vet? If so you need a stronger antibiotic like Draxxin, Nuflor, etc., sounds like pneumonia to me.

You wont find something worth using at tractor supply. Get a prescription drug from the vet, most likely draxxin or nuflor.
 
That's what I was afraid of. Catching this calf is going to be an issue I'm afraid. Any pointers on catching one out in the field? Outside of a miracle I'm not getting this one to follow the others into the pen.

I got my calf treated today thanks to my vets dart gun. After seeing how easy that was that is now a must have for me. It is a great option when you can't get one caught
 
Not out of the woods yet but since treating this calf it seems much better. Much more active and hanging out with the rest again. She was knocking the crap out of mommas bag yesterday, have not seen that in a while from this calf.
 
The cal seems better still but has noticeable labored breathing at times. It is having quick short breaths, I'm assuming lung damage from pneumonia. Is there anything I can do to help it in any way treatment wise? I'm watchin her closely and am tempted to give her another dose of draxxin. She is still having the occasional cough along with the labored breathing. Overall seems to feel a lot better and is no longer acting depressed, feeding much more, etc.
 
I imagine your assumption is correct on the lung damage. She will probably cough from now on. The breathing sometimes gets better with time but the cough is always there or at least it has been on the ones I have messed with.
 
You can't fix the damage to the lungs, that calf will likely be more susceptible to respiratory illness always. Be sure to keep a close eye as they can turn downward quickly. Good Luck! Hope she pulls through for you.
 
The calf has been doing great, at least as far as the sickness goes. The labored breathing is still there but overall much better and way more active. I see her nursing regularly now, hanging with the other calves etc. she isint growing worth a flip but I don't know what is to blame. I'm of the opinion the pneumonia is partly to blame but I don't think her momma I a very good miller either. I've not had this cow long enough to blame her completely so I will let her give me one more calf, which will be by my bull and judge her then. She is thin and overall just a strange cow, antisocial almost.
