Hi, we have a calf that just won't get better we've had the vet out. We vaccinated this calf and we have giving him Baytril and Nuflor. He seemed to get better after around of Baytril, but a few days later he's back to were he was. He breaths short and hard, somedays he has mucus coming out of his nostrils (not as white as it was). The vet doesn't seem to sure of what wrong. I'm going to hopefully talk to him today. I found this forum in my search for help, any would be appreciated. My husband and I are both pretty new to cattle, he's raised some in the past. Thanks Rainy

Had a similar situation this past summer. Two calves turned up sick with a respiratory illness, the vet said it was unusual because they hadn't been exposed to any sick cattle. I gave baytril as directed by the vet and one got completely over it after one treatment and the other got better and then had a relapse I treated it again but it didn't make it.

How old is the calf? Has it been wormed with something that will take care of lung worms? How long has it been sick? When you say a round of Baytril and Nuflor, how many shots. They weren't given at the same time were they?

A lot of times with respiratory problems, the calves will relapse when you think they're doing better. Been there, done that.
You probably need to re-treat the animal, and for a longer period of time. Unfortunately when they don't respond very well to treatment, they tend to become "bad doer's".

Thank you for all the input. We started, Forest, with Nuflor and followed the vets instructions, after some time then we did the Baytril 9ml for seven days with vets approval. The calf is about 300-400 lbs, not sure about age. We have not wormed him for lung worms. We have not used LA200?? He hasn't been right since we got him two months ago but seemed to get worst within last month, coughing breathing heavy.
What type of feed is he on and what type of pen are you keeping him in? Is either dusty?
...alternately, I attended a Pfizer talk the other day on vaccinations, and things like BVD and PI calves have been heavy on my mind lately. They said that PI calves are often the ones that "just don't ever seem to do well" or you're frequently treating them for this or that problem. Said it costs around $6 to have them tested - might want to discuss that one with your vet. The levels of antibiotic you put into that calf should have cleared up most anything he had, so I'd be thinking about other problems than just a common respiratory illness.

Do you know any history on the calf? Could this one have been a no doer from birth or was he OK when you got him and then quickly came down with something. The drugs that you've given him should have killed most any bacteria borne illness along with most of the bacteria in his rumen. I'm on authority but sure sounds like one of the BRDs, viral I would suspect. Not much can be done if his lungs have been damaged.
