All the discussion on the boards about AIing- and use of own bulls-- this year I did something that I may be either kicking myself in the rear for next year- or slapping my back...

I really like the heifers I've gotten out of the old Bannon of Wye bull- and the son I have Whitney Creek Bannon 730 T-- so this year for the first cycle I stuck him with 53 cows/heifers- and stuck the Legacy 726T bull with way less...

Today I moved everything together so they can pick up the slack for each other...

Since the wedding was over- I had a chance to get ahold of the camera and take some pictures of the cows, and all the grass and water....

After moving the cows I went looking for the main bunch- and found the Bannon 730T riding herd over his harem by several waterholes..

A OCC Magnitude out of a Cole Creek Juanada Lad 81T first calf heifer...This is the calf that got snake bit- but seems to be coming out of it no worse for wear...

I have to laugh at this picture due to the story behind this heifer...This is Cole Creek Juanada Rita 69W- that my son bought this spring at the Cole Creek sale...After he got the heifers he bought loaded- he commented about how flighty this one was in the trailer- and since she went back to Dunn High Mountain (mgs) and OCC Great Plains (mggs) I was a little worried about her disposition...We penned them by themselves until I could get them rebranded- and in walking thru them daily to feed the bum calves and stuff (and packing a little cake treat in my pocket) she quieted down as much as the others-- and now comes up to get her head scratched or see if I have some cake in my pocket again... ;-)

Nice animals and nice pictures. I love to see a bull go check the first female he encounters when he's turned out. My grandpa used to say "He knows why you bought him"

The flighty cow in the trailer sounds like one of mine. Bought a top-flight bred cow at a dispersal sale who was 9 years old at a price that made me figure I'd be ahead if I could get one heifer out of her. (Wound up getting 1 worthless, narrow-butted, undersized heifer and 4 really nice steers out of her :roll: ) It took 6 guys to get her in the trailer, and I was figuring to get pulled over for DUI on the way home she had the trailer swaying so bad. I was worried about her all the way home. Two or three days later she was as calm as anything I had. Apparently the auction ring is more traumatic to some animals than others.

Thanks Dylan... Yeah I've read stories about and talked with breeders that have used 1 mature Angus herdbull with 50-60-even 80 cows in a 60 day breeding period- but have never tried it...All the rain and the flooded creek cut down the size of my breeding pasture this year- so I thought it was a perfect time to try it...Hoping to get more consistency in some heifers- plus the added maternal qualities the Bannon bull seems to exhibit....
We'll see how well it worked next year....

Yeah- I think the Legacy bull was getting bored with his little herd...When I was trailing them over to put together- as soon as he saw cows on a far away hillside- he was off on a trot leaving his "girls" behind....

But this bull has an M.O. of travelling constantly during breeding season- cow to cow checking things out- a couple circles of the pasture a day...I've been told that is a trait his grandsire Rito 707 passed on to his sons....
 
Good looking cattle and countryside. We just made a trip across Montana along I-90 was the first real length I'd traveled across the state and it sure was gorgeous.
