Well, I was looking at Vispa, a BIG cow, probably 1800 lbs or so, and thought "Heck, she looks bulgy"... She's due in about 7-10 days I think


Should I get ready for twins?.. She's not particularly easy to handle or smart, hopefully I don't have a rodeo. It's either twins or it's going to be one heck of a bomber of a bull calf... she's done 140 lb'ers before without as much as a grunt..

If she accepts them, she's got the groceries to feed them

Hopefully she doesn't have them 21 days apart either :O





What do you think she has cooking in there? I don't remember any of her ancestors having twins
 
Could just be a lot of fluid. If it's twins she would most likely calve a week or so early.
 
That is true.. and I have noticed they're often early with twins. She's had big calves before so it could also be she's trying to break her previous record... This is her 5th calf, and I just looked up her records, she was bred at 2 years old, and every calf has been 110-120 lbs

Does she tend to cook them longer then what you would expect to be normal?
 
She looks a lot like the Braford who had twins back in early February.

I have this cow that looks like as if she is having twins or triplets but she usually popped out a tiny calf every time. I would think its too much fluids.

The last 2 heifers she's had (the only breeding dates I have) she carried 291 and 290 days, and my herd average is 288, she was at 279 when the picture was taken, so she could go 2 weeks more I guess.


I've got other cows who are big and round, and I do make the distiction between belly and calf bumps.... Last year I had one had a pair of bulls at 110 lbs each, and didn't suspect her.

Heck, I've never been right about twins yet, why start now?
 
I am with Bez. I don't think "size is a good indicator." Could be how the calf is just laying even.

Nesi you are behind on your clipping I see! :D

It is fun to speculate, I personally enjoy the funny wives tales as much as the good advice.

The best one I ever heard was from a Mexican ranch hand. He said if the cow is big on the right it is a bull and if she is big on the left it is a heifer. :roll:
 
She would be a heck of a rodeo to clip!... she'd make a good range cow, you can't keep up to her when she just strolls along!

If the cow is big on the right side it's hay!...

It is fun to speculate, At least if she does have twins she's got the groceries for them, and she'll have her work cut out too. Whatever it is I hope it all comes out ok... I think if her calf is 110 lbs or less she's going down the chute to get palpated anyhow.. just in case another one is in there with the legs the wrong way... That's how I lost one last year, though it had torn skin on its belly, so I don't think I would have saved it anyhow

If the calf is under 80 lbs you could have quadruplets! :shock: :lol:
 
Apparently once there was a holstein cow that had 2 sets of identical twins... apprently the odds of that are about 1 in 135 million.. all alive, and she would have had the groceries for them as well

I really hope she doesn't have a 'litter' of calves, she'd lose her mind trying to keep track of them

My twinners have generally looked pretty narrow - I wondered if the calves can't go cross-wise in the cow, so they lie in line with her spine and don't stick out the sides. The big bulgy cows have always had singles. Good fun watching yours and knowing I don't have to worry!!! :D
 
Speaking of backwards, I am noticing a certain degree of heredity when it comes to that to it seems.. This cow's full sister has had backwards ones twice, and her mother twice as well. Again, I have pretty small sample sizes, but as long as the feet are pointing the right way, she can do it forward or backwards. Her sister lost one to a breach birth... boy was that fun to get straightened out in a cow of that size... Our cow vet book shows you in up to your elbows when you can reach the hind legs of the calf... hahahhaha!, I had my full shoulder in there was was just able to get to the hocks, getting the chains around the hooves took a lot of effort and well.. go go gadget arms!
 
Has she calved yet? How did you come out? Hope it worked out well! I have a first time heifer doing this to me right now and all I can do is worry shes got twins or the calf is laying wrong, her due date is unknown but shes starting to bag, her full sister never showed any signs of calving until one night I went up to do chores and there she was with a new baby nursing, I was relieved she'd done it by herself and quite surprised to boot!!! They were supposed to be open when I bought them, Ive had them three months now and they all the sudden started to show! I myself am 7 months pregnant and worried about having the strength to pull out a couple calves! My poor vet is going to love me when I call him at midnight to drive 45 minutes to my place!!!
