I know that one or the other means polled or appendix registered but which which one is X and which one is *(asterisks)?

Actually I didn't know that the X meant anything at all. I've seen homozygous polled animals with no X behind their name, but perhaps its just not enforced? The asterisk is definitely enforced though, and if there is ANY impurity in the bloodline, it'll be an appendix animal.

It's a pain, with dogs, etc, the appendix is the pure registry.

X= polled will be the first digit of the registration number
*= appendix bassed cattle( first generation appendix will have an AR on their number)

Some of the appendix cattle that are getting several generations away from the cattle with * number will not have the * on them. I have a bull that is sired by a bull with the * out of a cow that is not appendix related and he doesn't have the * on his number.
You could have cattle with *X both on them if they are polled and appendix both.
