Shorthorn Breeders

We have some commercial ones here. A few purebred cows that are usually bred hereford or angus and a purebred bull that we breed to our hereford or angus cows.

Hello Coyote and Diamond S. I've been checking this website off and on for about a year now. I decided to put my 2 cents worth in for the first time a couple of days ago. Thanks for increasing the shorthorn content on this board with your posts. They have been interesting.

Oh, Coyote, in answer to your question, purebred and commercial breeder here.

Coyote - I have 3 registered heifers that I have bought. I plan to breed them to Angus for our commercial herd. That was a great looking roan bull that you posted on the Herd sire thread.

We raise purebred shorthorn and double registered milking shorthorns. About 50% of our breeding stock goes to commerical herds. Thanks to the recent shorthorn posts. keep it going.

I have raised Shorthorns since 1976. I have always had the best luck with the old dual bloodlines crossed on Deerpark Leader Irish bloodlines.
There are still some breeders out there that are interested in raising good cattle that have a place in the commercial industry. The club calf thing is just a good market if you can sell a few that way too. The two kinds of cattle are not exactly the same.

Killala, what does "SFA" stand for in the Australian Shorthorn
pedigrees?
Thanks

SFA stands for 'Special Foundation Animal'. The SFA rule allows, after visual inspection, the introduction into the Herd Book of non-registered purebred female Shorthorns considered to be of special value to the breed.
I think there is more information on the Shorthorn Beef website, otherwise I can post that section of the rule book here if you like.

I raise registered shorthorns. I have tried to avoid the club calf influence but have a few that have some club calf breeding. I'm thinking of breeding of a few of the non club calf shorthorns in my herd to a red angus to get a few durham reds.

I don't breed appendix Shorthorns, but you're right cattleluvr. I've seen some really nice appendix stuff out there that would do any commercial cattleman proud. I guess the registration stuff is kind of a joke, but at least the commercial guy has a better idea of what lurks under the hood of that blue roan.

Certainly better to have appendix stuff than that frame 7, pencil gutted show crap.
