I'm almost sorry I sold my red angus bull so soon. I didn't see allot of breeding activity out of him last summer but his calves are dropping very close together. First calf hit the ground March 3rd. All were born between then and now with the exception of 2 cows which look like they will drop any day. Thats just under 30 calves in 16 days. I should be calved out in 20 days. Normally I calve out in 45 days. Little boogers are hitting the ground running at about 75 to 80 pounds. Prettiest calf crop yet. No calving problems, no pullers and all of the heifers have calved but one and all have shown to be very motherly. Ratio has been 66% bulls and 34% heifer calves.

The biggest problem has been that they all are going back in the woods to calve in the thickest, nastiest briar patches imaginable. Makes it hard to keep an eye on the heifers that were calving or to tag and de-bag the little'uns. Dodging momma ain't easy in there either.
 
Man thats fast.I'm on day 47 right now and got 2 to go,but they should be dropping any day and my ratio is alot worse than yours 41% bulls 59 % heifers.
 
Shorter calving seasons are soooooo much easier. My cows started Feb 15, 29 on the ground and 8 left. Heifers started Feb 1 and were done Feb 28.

BB that's cause you're an "x" dairyman and also needed milk year round. :lol2: :lol2: But we do the same except try to avoid the hottest months.

all the reg breeders i deal with tell me its best to calve year round.that way you have bulls an heifers to sell to your customers year round insted of once a year.

Awesome Hoss hope that balancer bull will do the same. 60 DAY cycles are great I do 2 a year to keep up with the registered buyers, but it would be great to have a 20-30 cycle. good luck with the little ones and keep us posted when those balancer calves come out.
 
I am hoping for success on the balancer calves. I going to borrow my neighbors bull to help out this year due to the age of my new Balancer. I will put him on 15 to 20 head max since it is his first breeding year and watch him close. Neighbor has a great 4 year old low bw angus bull that he runs on 15 head or so. He gets his work done and then loafs for 10 more months so he is more than happy to let him graze in my pasture for a few weeks. We have a gate in between us so moving them around is convenient. Next year Mr. Balancer is gonna have to pull the whole load on his own though.

Ive had something like 31 calves born in 60 days. The drought really killed us. Last year I had 43 born in 33 days. I culled 4 open cows due to drought. Vet had checked em out said no reason they should not be able to breed. Bull passed bse. Vet said it was so hot last year and there was not much to eat and that lead to the problem. Have had two cows the last couple years have two calves in a 10 month period. Last year and again this year. They must be fertile. I have 8 more to go. Should round out at the end of march for my 90 day calving season. I turned the bull in a little earlier this year so he hopefully should have most of em bred before it gets to hot.

TNMBP, some in our area had your same problem with heat and drought. The only thing that saved me is that I am way under stocked. I had to cull one heifer this year as she was in with the bull from May through November and came up open. In the freezer she went.
