went across to the field to feed herefords when to my shock one of my heifers was on its side with legs and head hanging from behind. i didnt even know it was that far gone. thought it had been bread by new bull but it seems not. last winter my father brought some odds and sods of which one was a belgium blue bull. he assumed it was too young to breed so put all cattle together. what i thought would be a brown and white calf has now become a black and white calf. do you think this cross will work

Yes, but only for terminal purposes. The double muscle obstructs the birth canal in Belgian Blue female offspring making natural births almost impossible.

Yes, that is generally what happens when owners don't watch their heifers closely enough - no offense intended. Hell, even I can tell when a heifer is 6-7 months bred, and I have no experience with cattle - at least according to Milkmaid.

I have no experience with Belgian Blues, but I do know they are a double muscled bred and, as I understand it, that does tend to make their calves a fair bit bigger than non double-muscled breeds. A little more information is needed - what happened with the heifer who had legs and head hanging out of her backside? Did she deliver successfully? Based on your post, I'm thinking she didn't. Because of that, I believe I would be prepared for a calving season from hell, and I would be paying a lot more attention to my heifers if I were you.
