She Had It; Against All Odds

This is the open? (not) heifer I took delivery of in December. She got a shot of lut before she was delivered. I vaccinated her with two doses of Bovi-Shield Gold FP 5 L5 (MLV). The calf still held on. She had her calf about 6 hours ago. She and calf are fine. I took a wedge of the ear to the vet for BVD PI testing about 30 minutes ago. Should hear next week.
Here she is before delivery. I will get a pic of her and calf today.

Dunno if I read the rest of this story or not, but I like that heifer. Good to hear she had it all right. Did you have to assist or did she pop it right out?
My eyes or does she have some red on the topline?

Hey GB, look at the background in the thread below, Nature Finds A Way. Unassisted. All of my simangus get that reddish saddle during the summer. I think it is sun bleaching. Be sure to check below. Interesting story and response from Lucky

The cow and calf are in the Isolation unit pending receipt of test results. Cow is on mixed fed and units of whole water. The mother is permited to nurse her calf on a free choice basis. Both are being monitored closely by their guardian (me). The Isolation Unit is in tight lock down. Only sterile guests are permited visitation. The floor is a fresh layer of pea gravel to provide the most bacterial static conditions possible.

Blue is under threat of use of deadly force if he is caught disturbing the new mother and bady!

Sounds like she was run thru the gantlet. That is one fine looking heifer. You've found yourself a good source for stock.

Yep! Bought 4 blk heifers a few years ago and they all had that red tint. We feed a high copper mineral and have never seen it since they shed off the following spring!

I feed loose mineral and they are eating it at just above the recommended consumption level. Maybe I need to supplement it with a copper additive. Nevertheless, things are perfect on the performance level. Not having any sickness, cows are coming back in and being bred on an average of less than 40 days postpartum. Life is good. Only one cow in the past year retained placenta and she cleared. But I will fully confess about half my cows have the rusty looking saddle. The others are solid black on top. Odd, some have the rusty saddle, others don't. Anyone else have any take on this?

Copper's a funny thing. I've never seen a deficiency bad enough to affect performance, but it will cause bleached out hair pretty quickly. I'll have to read up again, but I think it shows quicker on 'dirty' fescue pastures.
We feed a loose mix that can't be fed to sheep because it's too high for sheep. But it sure keeps a good color in the Herefords!

So is the calf a bull or heifer? Looks like a heifer in the face, but it is hard to tell in newborns. Looks like the new cow is doing a great job! You got a real bargain there, a two in one and did not even know it!
I think the red saddle is normal for Simms, we see it a lot. Our show heifers do not get it, but they spend less time in the sun than the cows.

How many pounds do you think she is? She looks on the smaller side (70's maybe), which is good for your cow. Pictures can be deceiving though! She looks pretty good. Does the breeder have any idea on the sire side of the pedigree, or is it a wash? Either way, she might end up being a great breeding piece for you, since you know the dam is able to do her job! Time will tell...

Ron, I went out and looked at all of mine again. The 8 or 9 Registered Black Simmental had the red saddle look and all the registered Angus didn't. And it's like that every summer for me. Maybe Chan or Keith can tell you why. I asked another local Simmental breeder (since early 70's) he said "that's how they get in the summer heat...because they still have that Red gene in them"..........

You are too good at this. I told Anne today she was about 65 lbs. No idea which of those young bulls is the sire but they should all be good.

Nesikep: She is nice. I am very impressed with her udder. Until a heifer calves they are like a "box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get." The form and function of her udder is a nice surprise. She had the calf unassisted and has been a good momma. The only negative: she is shy. I wondered how she was going to be with her first calf and she is easy to handle. I had no threats from her when I separated the calf to get the ear wedge.

Keith: that is good to know about the rusty saddle. I have one cow that is a black baldie w/o any simmental in her and she does not have the rusty saddle and neither does the registered angus bull! I want to stop in the next time I get your way.
