Never heard of them, till recently. Is this a practice in other places?

It's been pretty common in a number of places we've lived. But only for residential, livestock was a private well.

Depends on the situation and the people involved but this is one of those things that can cause a whole passel of problems, expecially when the well goes out. I wouldn't have one if any other possibilities existed.

The places we've done it is where some guy breaks up a farm and there's a restriction on the number of acres required to drill a well. Then everyone just gets to use the old farm well. We had one deal that worked out real well because the members all paid a certain amount that went into an escrow acct. to pay for repairs. After a couple of years the local water company bought it and included it with theres. One of the ones that didn;t work to great was alwasy breaking down and having to get the pump fixed. Another the horses hiney stole all the oney and didn;t pay the electric bill. WHne the electric compnay shut off the power he beat feet and we were all stuck with no water and trying to get the electric compnay to turn the power back on without a huge deposit.

Definitely an area where conflicts can arise- Especially if the well starts to have trouble. sometimes people on a well seem wo waste water because they don't have to pay for it. Plus I believe the water has to be tested much more frequently than if it's just for one family. Would MUCH prefer to have individual well.

A good legal and binding contract or covenant is needed to insure that the maintenance and repair of the well equipment is equally shared among the users...meters can be installed and assesments made according to usage.
Been down this road before...
