have long been convinced that some cows were very selective but have no idea of the mechanism....it is why some cows have nothing but bull calves and others have mostly heifers....in my observation the cows that have bulls are much more consistent in producing bulls...cows that prefer heifers will slip in the occasional bull calf....my first three cows that I owned when we started our herd included two Hungry Jack Daughters.....Mildred was the herd builder and produced a good heifer every year....I still have cows that go back to Mildred....Betty paid the bills....had a good marketable bull calf almost as long as she lived....after several good bulls I wanted a heifer to replace her...as an old cow she gave me a heifer but the heifer could not compete with her herdmates...I kept her any how because she was out of Betty but she could not compete in raising calves either...Had that bull mama phenomenon repeated several more times over the years.
