Anyone knows of a used semen tank for sale.

Another suggestion if you are just starting out, Select Sires will loan you one (to try out) if you buy Semen from them. I am going to do that until I decide that doing my own AI is worth the time and effort for my small herd.

It is worth it...just make sure you don't buy too much and then lose it. Our nitrogen supplier missed us during his last fill-up rounds and we just realized yesterday that our tank went dry. $2500 down the drain. Worst thing is that some of the semen was from bulls that were quite prominent in the Hereford breed, but are no longer around.

I would not buy a used semen tank unless you know the person who owns it.
A tank might start to leak very slowly to start with and get worse over time. Then one day you check it and it's empty.

A record of the nitrogen levels should be required for the purchase of any used tank.

What difference would knowing the owner of the used tankl make. If it starts leaking he wouldn't necessarily know it.
IMO a used tank won't save more than maybe 100 to 200 $ and could cost you several 1000 $ in lost semen and embryos.

Most nitrogen fillers keep a record of the levels. I know people who have bought used tanks that had slow leaks. Someone you know prolly wouldn't sell you one if he knew it. A tank say, bought at an auction, might be suspect.

Thanks i will take that into mind but i just dont want to sell a cow and i am low on money thats why I need a used one.

how do you know to call a tank a leaker. A 90 day tank that lasts 92 days in winter might just last 78 in the summer.
I'm asking at what point is it leaking and not standard evap?
The extremes I can understand 90 day tank only lasting 45 for example. Would it help to throw some insulation over it in the summer?

Just remember, ALL tanks lose their vacuum at some point. Buying an older tank will increase the odds of losing a batch of semen.

if your going to get a seman tank.id try to get a new tank if at all possable.b/c the older a tank gets the more chance of it being a leaker.also moving the tank from syorage area to breeding chute doesnt help matters any.a semen tank needs tobe left where it is if at all possable.you would be better off leasing a tank.scott

Wow! Just looked at the prices for the Beefmaster bulls listed at sementank.com --- not a one of them is less than $100/straw. Sure wouldn't want to get a tank full of those guys and then have a bad leak!

I know nothing about beefmasters, but ABS has 2 bulls, one is 12 bucks the other is 20
