Someone ask about buying cattle with a brand ,well what about the other side of the trade ? What do you do to protect your self if you sell cattle at a salebarn with a registered brand then they get out and get hit by a car or do something they are not suppose to ?
the first person they will contact will be the owner of the brand

Then I guess you'd show them your paperwork from the auction and say "That was my cow, but I sold her, and here's the paperwork to prove it".

I have had 2 time that I had to deal with branded cattle that I sold ,both were bulls , first one was in a mans pasture and had gotten mean and the brand inspector said every time they got him up he would tear the place up he was about 200 miles away. I had sold him with a group of cows 5 years before from home but gave a bill of sale with all the brand info.
second bull was sold a few months ago at sale he was a fence breaking outlaw . I sold him as a no test bull so a packer would buy him but some man bought him and paid for the test himself a week later I start getting calls from sheriff that I have a bull out about 15 miles from my place. I contacted the brand reg and they said this can be a problem but with some work of proving I had sold him I will be ok.Also they said I needed to always make sure that salebarn records on check in paper work the brand info
thanks for the input I just wondered in anyone else had had any problems and if so what they did to protect them self in this sue happy world we live in.

I have $1,000,000.00 in farm liability insurance. Depending on the circumstances I assume that would help, but you can't protect yourself from every possible situation.
