Selecting a Cross Bow ?

I am having some shoulder issues and considering using a cross bow this fall. I took a quick look at Bass Pro and was surprised by the range of models and range of prices. Any suggestions for a good mid range deer hunting set up?

I hope you get some good responses on this thread Steve. I traded for a Barnett brand crossbow a few months ago and I've yet to fire it.

I was talking to trapper about crossbows in the new law thread workinonit created but I have 2 a ten point IMO which is the best and the Barnett which is 2nd. If you choose anything else IMO you wasted your $. If you want a good dependable midrange without dropping alot of $ Barnett

Edit: First make sure you have bolts readily available for whichever brand you choose.

Ten Point packages range from $600 to $1,700. :o

Barnett packages range from $300 to $1,000. I liked the sound of "Buck Commander CRT", but at $700 it still seemed a bit spendy. Any comments on these mid range packages ?

They cost about the same, but the cross bow does not kick as hard.

I bought my bows with scope and quiver that's it. I don't need a cocking device its not that hard to pull back. I don't like red dot scopes they are expensive and you have to worry about a battery running dead while hunting. I got bare bones bow that's all I needed. A sling???????? that's garbage atleast for me where I hunt I have enough problems walking through the woods with it on my hand moving it around branches. If I had it on my shoulder in the dark or going through woods the string would be frayed first hunt. I learned and use a cloth cover when taking my bows through the woods. Sit and ask yourself do you really need all of that.

Good reviews on this cross bow, but it is not match models in Bass Pro. Is it an older model, or does Bass Pro command there own line?

its a older model they have been making and revising for years the Barnett that is. I don't know much about bass pro crossbows honestly

Barnett Jackal is about as good as they get in the price range IMO.
I have more expensive Horton and pick the Barnett up most of the time.
Good rule of thumb due to noise level of a crossbow I have found is if it shoots 300 fps 30 yards is a safe shot
without it jumping the string 350 fps 35 yards etc.

I also bought one of these due to I can't pull the man bows anymore
Haven't scored with it yet and had to upgrade the sights other than that I was impressed.

Buy a modern crossbow and spend the money for a good one. I bought an original Stryker (@405fps) a number of years ago. Mine has never jumped the string and it came with a 3 dot scope. They are set at 20yds, 40yds & 60yds. flat shooting and fast. I have shot game at a much longer distance with excellent penetration.

Like with makes of cars, everyone has an opinion on which is best and no one is always right.
